The Algarve attracts a growing number of families, particularly since the rise of remote working. International schools, safe communities, outdoor lifestyle and relatively affordable property make it a strong option.

International schools

  • Nobel Algarve (Lagoa): British curriculum, ages 3-18. The largest international school in the Algarve.
  • Aljezur International School (Aljezur): small, nature-focused school popular with west coast families.
  • International School of the Algarve (Porches/Lagoa): established school with mixed curriculum.
  • Deutsche Schule (Silves): German curriculum.
  • Vilamoura International School (Loule): ages 2-14.
  • Best areas for families

    Lagoa/Carvoeiro: close to Nobel Algarve school, beach access, safe community, good restaurants. Premium but justified by the school proximity.

    Lagos: excellent for active families. Surf, kayak, cliff walking, historic town. Growing international community. Several nurseries and primary options.

    Loule/Almancil/Vilamoura: the Golden Triangle area offers the widest range of facilities. Close to Vilamoura International School. Beach access, golf, marina. Higher prices.

    Tavira: a more Portuguese experience. Excellent for families wanting language immersion. Beautiful, safe, affordable. Fewer international school options (may need to travel to Faro).

    Healthcare for children

    Paediatric services are available at Faro and Portimao public hospitals. Private paediatric clinics operate in Faro, Albufeira and Portimao. Vaccination programmes follow the Portuguese national schedule, which is comprehensive and free.

    Activities

    The Algarve is outstanding for outdoor family life: beaches (35 EU-monitored), nature parks, cycling, horse riding, water sports, zoo (Krazy World, Lagos Zoo), waterparks (Slide and Splash, Aqualand). Year-round outdoor living is the main draw.
